Natural Dyeing with the The Indigo Squirrel and Maggie Haaland

  • Cloth Collaborative 1476 River Street (map)

Join us for a day of natural dyeing!

In the morning, we will Learn the basics of Indigo dyeing with Cathy Wilkerson of The Indigo Squirrel. Exploring a variety of techniques, you will create a set of 4 hand-dyed cotton napkins. These make excellent gifts! Traditional shibori, resist, and pole-dying techniques will be included with hands-on help.

After lunch Maggie Haaland will teach you the basics of natural dyeing with locally foraged plants, focusing on cultivated daffodils and wild nettles. This is a great way to use spent daffodils, which will just be ending their flowering season, by transforming them into a dye that yields vibrant yellow shades. Nettles, that hardy, common urban plant gives bright yellow to olive green shades. In this workshop, we will share and experiment with harvesting dye plants, preparing a dye bath, the mordanting process, and dyeing as a way to connect more deeply with the land around us. You’ll leave with the skills needed to experiment on your own, and with two beautifully dyed pieces from class.

Please bring a bagged lunch. This event will happen outdoors rain or shine. NO PREVIOUS SKILLS NECESSARY. Come have fun, get messy, explore and see what you can do!

This event is generously sponsored by the City of Boston and is free. Space is limited.
